I have the blessing (or curse some may say) of a visual perfectionist. I see the world through my viewfinder, and am always unconsciously creating images. For the people I photograph, this means that I see the details that make a difference in a portrait – the collar that is not straight, the tree in the background sticking out of someone's ear. I can read a face and analyse the best side, and know instinctively which angles and light will create the most flattering portrait.

Most people say to me before a portrait session that they “hate having their photo taken!” This is not surprising since it is something that we rarely have done professionally. With this is mind, I approach each session with empathy, patience and experience – Empathy to understand each person's concerns and needs; Patience to allow everyone time to relax and enjoy the occasion; and Experience to know how to anticipate the special moments that occur and capture them with great lighting, composition and expression.

The most common question I am asked is, ”When is the perfect time for a family portrait?” When is there not a perfect time? All stages of life are perfect from newborn babies onwards. Even the big gap in his smile as your child loses his first teeth is a special time. The important thing is not to miss out, waiting for the 'perfect' moment to arrive.

Your portraits will be photographed in locations that are familiar and meaningful to you so that you can relax and have images that reflect your family at this point in time. This may mean having photographs taken in your own home or bach, at your local park or beach, or any other location that is special to you. We want you to have images that are fresh, exciting and personal to you. I love going into a new space and seeing where the best light is, and deciding how to create spontaneous images that will reflect the people I am photographing.

You'll get a relaxed session in your own favourite place, with personal, professional help to capture natural looking moments. And, you'll get our best no-risk guarantee.

With your help and our expertise, we try to ensure that the very best is created from your photo session. Most problem areas are easily avoidable when you plan properly. However, we guarantee our work, and if you aren't happy, we will always offer to reshoot any session that fails to meet your expectations, or refund your money.

Ben was an amazing 99 years old when he was photographed with his great granddaughter Sheri when she was home visiting her family from England. We photographed many different variations of the whole family group in the studio, but this image of Ben and Sheri has always been special, showing the innocence of both extreme old age and new life.

The image won a Gold Award at the N.Z.I.P.P. national competitions, and also sparked the creation of Terry's latest book, "Granddads, Grandmas, Nanas and Poppas", a book which celebrates the special bond that exists between grandparents and their grandchildren.

Trent's older sisters had been photographed when they turned 13, and his Mum and Dad wanted images of Trent at the same age that reflected his personality and interests. He was photographed in a variety of different ways, but this image was special as Trent was very involved in competitive swimming.

The image won the "People" section of the 1994 Agfa Photokina competition, which won Terry a trip to the Photokina tradeshow in Cologne, Germany where he was presented with the award.

Four year old Maddy's distinct personality comes through in this photograph. Although quite a tomboy and very independent, Maddy also enjoyed dressing up in her fairy outfit.

Bede had been photographed by Terry at a younger age, and this time was photographed with his parents and 2 brothers in a variety of family group images. He was promised an image of himself doing what he wanted to do, and this is Bede and his muscles.

Dad spent a lot of time playing with his 5 month old daughter, balancing her on his hand which she obviously enjoyed. The use of Dad's black shirt and the baby's bare skin emphasize his strength and her innocent joy.

Local devotees requested a series of images of their Tibetan buddhist teacher. Terry wanted to portray his glowing persona, and used lighting and styling techniques to accentuate his delightful personality.
